Dan Gateshill is the Regional Director at our Hampshire, Dorset and Isle of Wight office. We asked him a few questions to help you get to know the man behind the desk.
How long have you been with ASC?
Six and a half years.
What makes you a good broker?
Feedback from my clients shows they value my ability to speak on their level and to ask questions that help me to understand what they want to achieve fully. I genuinely care about their project and want to help them achieve their goals. At the same time, I’m good at direct communication and can help my clients adjust their requirements if required rather than set false expectations.
What is the most challenging finance deal you’ve put together?
One of my most challenging deals was the purchase of a Grade II listed former stately home, which was borderline derelict. My client wanted to acquire and redevelop it into a unique wedding venue with holiday let accommodation.
The challenge was to sell the dream to lenders, as there was no track record, and the property had been in a state of disrepair for many years.
Working with the client to develop a detailed business plan and financial projections, we secured the support of a short-term lender, which gave them the funds they needed to buy the property and start the redevelopment project.
What do you enjoy most about your work?
I take great satisfaction from getting a deal over the line, as I know it’s making a genuine difference in someone’s life. It could be to help them grow their business, add a property to their portfolio to increase their wealth, or help with a property refurbishment project, which might be their first on the road to becoming a full-blown property developer. Everything we do makes a difference, and using our expertise and industry contacts is key to making this happen. It’s hard work but very rewarding.
I also enjoy working with our professional introducers so that they can add value to their client relationships. I have made some great friends through this and wider networking activities, all of which have helped me grow professionally and personally.
What are your interests outside of work?
I have two children, aged 15 and 11, and a lunatic cocker spaniel, so they all keep me active. I’m a keen golfer and play as often as work and family commitments allow. I also taught myself how to DJ in the first lockdown, so now I can mix my favourite tunes and upload them online for others to enjoy (or not). I’ve no plans to be an international DJ, but if a Vegas residency came up…!
